Polar bears? On the Isle of Wight? Yeah right!? you must be thinking. Of course, there aren’t any actual polar bears on the island, but if you stand on the beaches of Southbourne and look east across the waves, youâll know exactly what everyoneâs talking about!
When the sun hits the white cliffs on the western end of the island, the polar bearâs shape is unmistakeable, its head pointing easterly, the curve of its back outlined by the clifftop. But this isnât the only famous landmark to be seen in the area. Just west of the Polar Bear are the Needles, a row of three chalk stacks jutting thirty metres above the waves. Thereâs also the iconic Needles Lighthouse, built in 1859 and painted with thick red stripes to distinguish it from the white chalk stacks.
